DES MOINES, Iowa - A Marion man's morning began as usual, but ended differently when he discovered he'd won a top prize of $30,000 playing the lottery's "Holiday Crossword" instant-scratch game.
Ed Murphy, 55, stopped into Kum & Go, 1203 Blairs Ferry Road NE in Marion as usual and picked up a few Holiday Crossword tickets.
"Scratched it off, went back in and said, 'You know, I want to check this,'" Murphy said. "He never had anything like that before! I'm just tickled to death."
Murphy, who is a custodial supervisor at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, waited for his wife, Deborah, to get to work before he told her the big news."She was surprised," he said with a laugh.
Murphy claimed his prize Friday, the same day he scratched the ticket, at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. He had not yet had a chance to tell his other family and friends the big news.
Murphy said he is planning to pay some bills with his winnings.
