DES MOINES, Iowa - An Oskaloosa woman decided to buy a couple "Peppermint Super Crossword" instant-scratch tickets to pass the time while at the doctor's office and ended up winning a top prize of $50,000.
Brittany Bonnett, 23, said she had to ask the receptionist at her son's doctor's office to double-check the ticket for her.
"She's like, 'Oh, there's nine, you won five thousand!'" Bonnett said.
Bonnett was excited, and asked her mom to also look over the ticket.
"My mom was looking at it and she's like, 'You have ten words! You won $50,000!'" she said.
Bonnett took her ticket back to Hy-Vee Gas, 1027 N. Quincy Ave. in Ottumwa to have it validated.
"We were screaming," she said with a laugh as she claimed her prize Thursday at the Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Des Moines.
Bonnett said she usually plays the $3 Crossword games, but decided to try her luck on the $5 Peppermint Super Crossword; she's glad she did!
"I don't think it's really set in yet," she said.
Bonnett, who is a stay-at-home-mom, said she plans to do some shopping and share the winnings with her family.
