Patricia Dever Wins Top Prize Playing 'Tic-Tac Dough' Scratch Game

DES MOINES, Iowa - An eastern Iowa woman purchased scratch tickets as stocking stuffer gifts for herself and her immediate family, and the decision paid off on Christmas morning.

Patricia Dever, 45, of Maquoketa gave a "Tic-Tac Dough" scratch ticket to each family member and when her daughter's boyfriend scratched off the tickets - hers won a $30,000 top prize.

"I wasn't even really paying any attention to it and then I noticed that he passed the ticket to my other daughter's boyfriend that was sitting on the couch with him to say, 'Hey, look at this. Is this right?'" Dever said.

After passing the winning ticket around for everyone to confirm, Dever said they quickly finished opening up their gifts and went to a local convenience store to double-check.

"We gave the cashier the $30,000 one, or where we thought we had won, and sure enough we did and that is that," she said. "I couldn't believe it."

Dever, a teacher at Cardinal Elementary School in Maquoketa, purchased her winning ticket several weeks ago at Casey's, 104 Westgate Drive in Maquoketa. She claimed her prize Thursday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. She claimed the sixth of seven top prizes of $30,000 available in the Tic-Tac Dough game.

Dever, an occasional lottery player, said she thought scratch tickets made great stocking stuffer gifts, and after winning a top prize it might become a new holiday tradition.

"I never had a thought in my head that it would be that much," she said. "I'm sure this will be a tradition every year, no doubt about it."

Dever said her lottery winnings will be used to pay off bills, help with college expenses for her two daughters and pay for a previously planned trip to Florida this summer.
