Peggy Erickson Wins Prize in 'Win Big' Scratch Game

CLIVE, Iowa — A Humboldt woman bought a lottery ticket on a trip for groceries and won a $30,000 prize.

Peggy Erickson, 71, won the 32nd prize of $30,000 in the Iowa Lottery's "Win Big" scratch game.

"I told my husband I'd take him out for lunch today," Erickson joked on Monday as she claimed her prize at the lottery's Storm Lake regional office. "Least I could do."

Erickson bought her winning ticket at Hy-Vee, 611 10th Ave. N. in Humboldt. She scratched to reveal the ticket code, then handed it to an employee to check on the store's lottery terminal.

"She just stood there, kind of looking, and I thought, 'What's the problem?'" Erickson recalled. "She says, 'You won!' Then she says, 'You won $30,000!'"

It was part of a winning morning for Erickson, who said she won a $250 prize on a different ticket earlier in the day.

"I thought that was my big deal," she said. "Well, then I did this, and won this $30,000, and I thought, 'Boy, that really makes my day!'"

Erickson said she plans to put part of her winnings toward an upcoming trip to Council Bluffs.
