Poweshiek County Woman Wins $10,000 Lottery Prize

Elizabeth Besst Claims Big Prize In 'Snow Much Fun' Game

CLIVE, Iowa — A Poweshiek County woman who won a $10,000 prize said the big win was hard to comprehend.

"I just honestly thought it was too good to be true," Elizabeth Besst said Tuesday as she claimed her prize at Iowa Lottery headquarters in Clive. "You always hear about people doing it, but I don't know, I've never known anybody who has, so I was like, 'There's no way!'"

Besst, 23, of Montezuma, won the fifth top prize in the "Snow Much Fun" scratch game. On her way to visit family for Christmas, she and her boyfriend stopped at DeWitt Travel Mart, 630 S. Sixth Ave. in DeWitt.

"Our family's thing is to always get scratch-off tickets, so we made our annual stop at the local gas station to get them," Besst said. "My boyfriend, before I walked in, was like, 'Hey, make sure you grab us a couple – preferably a winner!' And so I grabbed two for him and two for me."

She said she didn't believe her eyes when she uncovered one of the game's top prizes on her ticket. She scanned the ticket with the Iowa Lottery mobile app to confirm her win, then took it back to the store to check on the lottery terminal.

"I was in shock," she said. "I'm still in shock! It's crazy. It's a surreal feeling, for sure."

Besst, a business office manager, said she plans to use her winnings to purchase new flooring in her home.
