Des Moines Man Wins Lottery Prize Of More Than $443,000

Brad Carter Wins Largest InstaPlay Prize To Date

Brad Carter

CLIVE, Iowa — A Des Moines man bought a lottery ticket on a stop for a pop and won more than $443,000.

"I'm just shocked as much as anything," Brad Carter told officials on Monday as he claimed his "Super 7s Progressive" InstaPlay prize of $443,507 at lottery headquarters in Clive. "I double-checked it, double-checked it and double-checked it. It's a pretty good feeling, I can tell you that."

Carter, 50, bought his lucky ticket at QuikTrip, 849 Army Post Road in Des Moines, where he stopped after washing his van. After he realized he'd won, he called his wife, Angel, right away.

"I'm pretty emotional, I can't talk and stuff, so she didn't know what was going on until I calmed down a little bit and told her," he said.

Carter, who owns his own painting business, said he had his wife, his kids and his in-laws check his ticket, just to be sure.

"Until someone confirms it, you're just in shock," he said.

The Super 7s jackpot starts at $50,000 and increases with each ticket sold statewide until it is won. The previous record for an InstaPlay prize was a jackpot of $303,674 in the Extreme Green Progressive game in January 2022.

Carter, who also won a jackpot of $28,840 in January 2022, said he and his wife hadn't yet decided what they'll do with the winnings. Angel added that a larger kitchen would be nice. Whether that would be at their current home or a new one remains to be seen.

The InstaPlay product combines features from instant-scratch and lotto games. InstaPlay tickets are called "scratchless" because they have no security coating that needs to be removed to determine the prize won. And rather than having supplies of tickets printed in advance like those in traditional scratch and pull-tab games, InstaPlay tickets are printed on demand from the lottery terminal.

InstaPlay games range in price from $1 to $30. visit www.ialottery.com.
