Des Moines Man's Long-Running Tradition Yields $10,000 Lottery Prize

Cary Maged Claims Top Prize in 'Lucky Roll' Scratch Game

CLIVE, Iowa — Winning a $10,000 lottery prize is just the cherry on top for a Des Moines man's delicious weekly tradition.

"Our method has been the same for 22 years," said Cary Maged, 67.

The latest version of his ritual started like it always does. As usual, Maged and his wife purchased several lottery tickets at Hy-Vee, 3221 SE 14th St., Des Moines.

"I didn't look at any of the tickets, any of the numbers," said Maged. "We got home and those tickets sit in the cabinet until about 5:00."

As is custom, the couple prepared cocktails, gourmet appetizers and a big meal. All the while, they slowly scratched away at their tickets. Once the two reached a Lucky Roll scratch ticket, they suddenly stopped.

"She scratched it and just didn't say anything and says, 'You better look at this!'" Maged recalled. "I jumped up and looked at it and saw the '10' with the comma, with the three zeros."

Maged claimed his prize Friday at lottery headquarters in Clive. He and his wife are retired and plan to use their winnings to make a future trip a little more comfortable.

Lucky Roll is a $2 scratch game that features seven top prizes of $10,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.65. For more information about this game, and the number of prizes still available, visit www.ialottery.com.
