On Her Birthday, Cedar Rapids Woman Wins $30,000 Lottery Prize

Teresa Kilts Claims Top Prize in Pick 4 Game

Teresa Kilts

CLIVE, Iowa — A Cedar Rapids woman last week won a $30,000 lottery prize on her birthday.

Teresa Kilts, 59, won her big prize in the March 6 Pick 4 evening drawing. She matched all four numbers drawn in the exact order: 3-6-5-0; this is known as a straight play. She wagered $5 to win the game's top prize of $30,000.

Kilts said she usually make a straight/box play in which a prize can be won by matching the four numbers drawn in any order. A straight/box play features better odds but a lower prize.

"I said, ‘I'm going to take one set and play it straight at the full wage,' and I'll be darned, they came up!" she told officials Thursday as she claimed her prize at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

Kilts, an administrative assistant, purchased her winning ticket at Hy-Vee, 1843 Johnson Ave. NW in Cedar Rapids. She didn't hesitate when asked what she'll do with her winnings.

"Oh, I am definitely going to be debt-free," she said. "That's a great feeling."

Pick 4, which has been offered in Iowa since September 2003, features odds of just 1 in 10,000 of winning the game's $30,000 top prize. It offers a variety of play options and wagers from 50 cents to $5 for the chance to match a four-digit number combination from 0000 to 9999.
