Chickasaw County Man Wins $50,000 Powerball® Prize

Lawrence Hackman Claims Large Prize in May 5 drawing

Lawrence Hackman

CLIVE, Iowa - A Chickasaw County man who won a $50,000 Powerball prize said he had a hunch he might be in for an exciting day on the morning he checked his tickets.

"That little bell in my head this morning kind of went off: 'Well, I wonder if I'm going to win this morning,'" Lawrence Hackman told officials on May 5 as he claimed his prize at the lottery's Mason City office. "And here I am."

Hackman, 69, of Lawler matched four of five white balls and the Powerball in the May 5 drawing. He was one number away from winning that night's $143.6 million jackpot.

He won with a set of lucky numbers he first came across on a free play he received several months ago through the Iowa Lottery's VIP Club. He liked the numbers and decided to play them again.

"I just had a funning feeling," he said. "I tried running those numbers again."

Hackman purchased his winning ticket at Bucky's, 603 E. Highway 24 in Lawler, where he stops every morning for coffee. He returned to the store the morning after the drawing and asked the clerk to check his ticket.

"I heard the 'Woo hoo!' and I thought, 'Well, here goes another $2,'" he said. "I said something about that and he said, 'It's a little bigger than that!' and showed me the amount."

The winning numbers in the May 5 drawing were 16-23-28-40-63 and Powerball 1. The Power Play was 2.

Hackman said he plans to use his winnings to pay off debt.

Players in $2 Powerball choose their first five numbers from a pool of 69, and another number - called the Powerball - from a separate pool of 26. The Power Play® option is available for an extra $1 per play.

Since getting its start in April 1992 in 15 states with jackpots that started at a guaranteed $2 million, Powerball has grown into one of the world's biggest and most recognizable lottery games. Today Powerball is played by 48 lotteries across the country with drawings at 9:59 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
