Powerball® Jackpot Climbs to $1 Billion for Saturday’s Drawing

CLIVE, Iowa — For the second time in four months, the Powerball® jackpot has soared into the stratosphere, capturing nationwide attention. Saturday’s jackpot now stands at an estimated $1 billion annuity, $457.7 million cash option. It’s the seventh-largest in the game’s history, and biggest since a $1.787 billion jackpot was won on Sept. 6 with tickets purchased in Missouri and Texas. “It’s another exciting chance for Iowans to dream big,” said Iowa Lottery CEO Matt Strawn, who also serves as chair of the Powerball Product Group. “We remind our players that it only takes one $2 ticket to win and encourage everyone to play responsibly“.

When is the drawing?

Saturday’s drawing will take place at 9:59 p.m. It can be streamed live on the Iowa Lottery’s website here.

Don’t miss the deadline

Most Powerball tickets are sold the day of the drawing, but don’t forget: In Iowa, sales cut off at 8:59 p.m. If you buy after that, your ticket will be valid for a future drawing—not Saturday’s. The cut-off is automated and can’t be extended.

Not just the jackpot

When the jackpot reaches this high, the game’s player base expands, with a lot of occasional and first-time players buying tickets. And while the eye-popping jackpot is what draws the most attention, the Iowa Lottery reminds everyone to check their tickets for all prizes they may have won, not just the jackpot. There are nine prize levels in Powerball, from $4 for matching the Powerball number alone to winning the jackpot for matching all six numbers in a drawing. You can find a prize payout chart, complete with odds, on the Iowa Lottery’s website.

Do the odds change when more people play?

No. Every ticket purchased has the same chance of winning in a drawing, regardless of the number of tickets sold or how big the jackpot is. The odds are based on the total number of possible number combinations that could be drawn. To win the jackpot, the odds are 1 in 292.2 million. The overall odds of winning a prize are 1 in 24.9.
