CLIVE, Iowa — A Sioux City man has won a $50,000 Powerball® prize.
Daniel Herfel matched four of five white balls and the Powerball in the drawing on Aug. 20. He was one number away from winning that night's $650.1 million jackpot.
Herfel bought his winning ticket at Hy-Vee, 3301 Gordon Drive in Sioux City, and claimed his prize Friday at the lottery's Storm Lake regional office.
The winning numbers in the Aug. 20 drawing were 31-59-62-65-68 and Powerball 5. The Power Play® number was 2.
The game's jackpot has continued to grow since then, with Monday's drawing standing at an estimated $750 million — the 10th largest in the game's history.
Since getting its start in April 1992 in 15 states with jackpots that started at a guaranteed $2 million, Powerball has grown into one of the world's biggest and most recognizable lottery games. Today, Powerball is played by 48 lotteries with drawings at 9:59 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
