CLIVE, Iowa — A southwest Iowa man said he did a double-take after scratching off a $20,000 lottery prize.
"As I'm getting older, I can't see really well, so I went and got the glasses and checked it," Shane Farley said on Monday as he claimed his prize at the lottery's main office in Clive. "Until I came and got the money here today, I was in disbelief."
Farley, 48, of Essex, won a top prize in the Iowa Lottery's "Mega Money" scratch game. He bought his winning ticket at 1482 Iowa Highway 48 in Essex, and scratched it when he got home. After double-checking his ticket with glasses on, he took it back to the store and confirmed it on the lottery terminal, just to be sure.
"Then I was like, 'What do I do with this ticket?'" Farley recalled. "It was a Sunday. Do I go hide it under my pillow and not tell anybody? Sit on it and guard it?"
Farley, a plumber, said he plans to put his winnings toward finishing an ongoing home improvement project.
"I've been remodeling my basement for like three years," he said. "I'm finally going to get the parts, and cabinetry, and all the stuff, and finish that."
Mega Money is a $2 scratch game featuring five top prizes of $20,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.88. For more information about this game, and the number of prizes still available, visit www.ialottery.com.
