No Joke: Northeast Iowa Man Pockets $25,000 Lottery Prize

Tyler Hicok Claims Big Prize In '500X' Scratch Game

CLIVE, Iowa — A $25,000 lottery win this week had a northeast Iowa man celebrating — and doing some quick convincing.

Tyler Hicok, 37, of Plainfield, said his wife, Kristin, was skeptical of his big win at first.

"When I told her, she said, 'April Fool's (Day) is tomorrow. You know that, right?'" he said on Wednesday as he claimed his prize at the lottery's Cedar Rapids regional office. "I said, 'Yeah, but I'm not joking!'"

Hicok won playing the Iowa Lottery's "500X" scratch game. He bought his winning ticket at Pronto, 7305 La Porte Road in Washburn. He scratched the ticket while filling up his car and couldn't believe his luck.

"I didn't know what to do," he said. "I locked it in the glove box because I didn't want to lose it.

"It's mostly disbelief," he added. "You're like, 'There's no way! I must've scratched it wrong.' So you look at it, and look at it."

Hicok said he plans to put some of his winnings toward a new deck and invest the rest.

500X is a $50 scratch game that features 12 top prizes of $500,000, 39 prizes of $25,000 and overall odds of 1 in 4.33. For more information about this game, and the number of prizes still available, visit www.ialottery.com.
