CLIVE, Iowa — A northern Iowa man is celebrating a $200,000 Powerball win he discovered on his birthday.
“I'm happy as can be,” Steven Saltou said Tuesday as he claimed his prize at the lottery's Mason City regional office.p>
Saltou, 73, of Northwood, matched four of five white balls and the Powerball in the April 4 drawing. His initial $50,000 prize was quadrupled because he opted for the $1 Power Play® option, which multiplies non-jackpot prize amounts by up to 10 times.
Saltou bought his ticket at Kwik Star, 235 S. Eisenhower Ave. in Mason City, and returned to the store the morning after the drawing to check his ticket. An employee scanned the ticket on the lottery terminal and heard the “You're a winner!” sounder signifying a winning ticket.
“I said, 'Wow, maybe I won 200 bucks!'” Saltou recalled with a laugh. “She said, 'Yeah, it's a little bit bigger than that!' I almost hit the floor.”
Saltou said he and his wife plan to pay off their house and their vehicle and enjoy a debt-free lifestyle.
Players in $2 Powerball choose their first five numbers from a pool of 69, and another number – called the Powerball – from a separate pool of 26. The Power Play option is available for an extra $1 per play.
Since getting its start in April 1992 in 15 states with jackpots that started at a guaranteed $2 million, Powerball has grown into one of the world's biggest and most recognizable lottery games. Today Powerball is played by 48 lotteries across the country with drawings at 9:59 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
