Powerball® Jackpot Grows Again Ahead of Christmas Eve Drawing

Wednesday's Jackpot Up to Estimated $1.7 Billion

CLIVE, Iowa — The reindeer are resting. The Powerball® jackpot is not.

Monday night's Powerball drawing produced no grand-prize winner, sending the estimated jackpot to a $1.7 billion annuity, $781.3 million cash option for Wednesday's Christmas Eve drawing. This is the fourth-largest jackpot in U.S. history.

"The holidays are already a special time, and a Powerball jackpot of this size certainly adds to the excitement," said Iowa Lottery CEO Matt Strawn. "As always, we encourage players to have fun, play responsibly, and enjoy the anticipation heading into the Christmas Eve drawing."

Prizes Won in Iowa

Iowa Lottery players won a total of 37,996 prizes in Monday's Powerball drawing, including one ticket that was only one number away from winning the night's big jackpot.

That ticket matched four of five white balls and the Powerball and won $50,000. It was purchased at Casey's, 780 N. Main St. in Walcott, and can be claimed at any Iowa Lottery office.

There are nine prize levels in Powerball ranging from $4 up to the jackpot, so the Iowa Lottery reminds its players to be sure to check their tickets for all the prizes they may have won. You can find a full prize payout chart, complete with odds, on the Iowa Lottery's website.

The winning numbers in Wednesday's drawing were 3-18-36-41-54 and Powerball 7. The Power Play® multiplier was 2.

Iowa Sales For Monday's Drawing

Iowa Lottery players purchased nearly $2.26 million in Powerball tickets for last night's drawing, including $1.79 million in tickets on Monday alone. But the average Powerball purchase in Iowa for Monday's drawing remained around $6, or about three plays per ticket. Lottery officials were pleased to see that many Iowans joined in the fun while keeping their play at a responsible level.

The Deadline to Buy Tickets

Most Powerball tickets are sold the day of the drawing, but don't forget: In Iowa, sales cut off at 8:59 p.m. If you buy after that, your ticket will be valid for a future drawing, but not Wednesday's. The cut-off is automated and can't be extended.

Wednesday's drawing will take place at 9:59 p.m. It can be streamed live on the Iowa Lottery's website here.

Powerball Add-On Options

It only takes one $2 ticket to be in the running for Wednesday's massive jackpot. But in the past few days, the Iowa Lottery has fielded lots of questions from first-time and occasional players about the game's optional $1 add-ons. Here's a breakdown of those:

  • The Power Play® option multiplies any non-jackpot prize by up to 10 times.
  • The Double Play® option gives a player's numbers a chance to win in both the main Powerball drawing and a separate Double Play drawing that immediately follows.

A full game breakdown, complete with information about odds and prize levels, is available on the Iowa Lottery's website

Already a Record

Though Wednesday's jackpot is the fourth-largest in U.S. history, it's already a record-holder in another respect. Wednesday will mark the 47th drawing since the jackpot was last won in September, extending a record for the longest jackpot run in the 33-year history of the game.

This marks only the second time in Powerball history that the game has produced back-to-back jackpots exceeding $1 billion. The other occurrence was in 2023, when a $1.08 billion jackpot was won in July, followed by a $1.765 billion jackpot won in October.

Please Play Responsibly

The Iowa Lottery reminds players that Powerball is meant to be entertainment. Setting a budget and playing within your means helps keep the experience fun. It only takes one $2 ticket to win.
