CLIVE, Iowa — A northwest Iowa man said he had a hunch he was on to something good as he scratched off a lottery ticket that revealed a $30,000 lottery prize.
Kelly Reis of Vail won a top prize in the Iowa Lottery's "$30,000 Crossword" scratch game. In the game, players try to complete words with a given set of letters. The more words completed, the larger the prize.
Reis said he quickly realized his lucky ticket was different than others he'd scratched.
"I'm like, 'Wow, I've got how many words up here and it keeps going? I love this!'" Reis said with a laugh as he claimed his prize Wednesday at the lottery's main office in Clive.
Reis, who works for a Des Moines-based asphalt company, bought his winning ticket at Beer Thirty, 923 Fourth Ave. S. in Denison. He scratched the ticket while unwinding after work.
After checking his ticket over and over with the Iowa Lottery mobile app, he quickly called his girlfriend with the good news.
"I said, 'You'll never believe this!'" Reis recalled. "It feels fantastic."
Reis said the win came as a welcome relief, giving him the opportunity to pay off medical bills.
