Cedar Rapids Man Almost Threw Away $15,625-Winning Lottery Ticket

Dwayne Wilson Claims Big Prize in Pick 4 Lotto Game

CLIVE, Iowa — A Cedar Rapids man said he almost disposed of a $15,625-winning lottery ticket by mistake.

Dwayne Wilson was cleaning out his car when he found the Pick 4 ticket he'd purchased at Casey's, 4560 16th Ave. SW in Cedar Rapids.

"I was really, truly about to throw it away because I had so much in my center console," he said on Wednesday as he claimed his prize at the lottery's Cedar Rapids regional office. "I said, 'Let me just check it first.'"

Wilson, 56, won big in the July 18 midday Pick 4 drawing. He made a $5 straight/box wager, meaning he could win a prize by matching the four numbers drawn in any order. But his prize was larger because he matched the numbers in the exact order drawn: 2-3-1-0.

He said he didn't believe his luck after checking it on the store's self-checker. He checked it three more times, just to be sure.

Wilson said he plans to put some of his winnings toward a new set of tires for his vehicle and a life insurance policy.

Pick 4, which has been offered in Iowa since September 2003, features odds of just 1 in 10,000 of winning the game's $30,000 top prize. It offers a variety of play options and wagers from 50 cents to $5 for the chance to match a four-digit number combination from 0000 to 9999.
