Traffic Jam Leads To $50,000 Win For Linn County Man

Shawn Holub Claims Top Prize In '$50,000 Super Crossword' Game

CLIVE, Iowa — A Linn County man who won a $50,000 lottery prize said he has a bout in rush-hour traffic to thank for it.

Shawn Holub, 53, of Marion, won the fifth top prize in the Iowa Lottery's "$50,000 Super Crossword" scratch game. He purchased his winning ticket at Kwik Star, 1001 Blairs Ferry Road NE in Cedar Rapids, where he stopped after heavy traffic prevented him from going to his usual store.

"I was coming home from work, traffic was really bad and I couldn't get into the lane that I wanted to be in, so I just went on down the road to Kwik Star," Holub said on Wednesday as he claimed his prize at the lottery's Cedar Rapids regional office. "It was meant to be, I guess."

He took the ticket home and gave it to his wife, Paula, to scratch.

"She wasn't saying anything," Holub said. "She looked at me and was like, 'You might want to scan this.'"

Holub, who works in sales, scanned the ticket with the Iowa Lottery mobile app and confirmed the huge win.

"We didn't know what to do," he said. "We just kind of stood there and looked at each other."

Holub said he and his wife plan to put some of the winnings toward home improvements.
