Butler County Woman Wins $50,000 Lottery Prize

Suzanne Wubbena Claims Top Prize In '$50,000 Super Crossword' Game

CLIVE, Iowa — A Butler County woman said she and her husband couldn't believe their luck after scratching off a $50,000 lottery prize.

"It turned out we got all 10 words right, but several years ago he did this to me and we never won a thing on it because he scratched too many letters off," Suzanne Wubbena said with a laugh on Wednesday as she claimed the prize at the lottery's Mason City regional office. "So, I thought, 'Oh no, this isn't true,' but it was!"

Wubbena, 60, of Allison, won the 19th top prize in the Iowa Lottery's "$50,000 Super Crossword" scratch game. She bought a pair of tickets in the game at J & C Grocery, 306 N. Main St. in Allison: one for her and one for her husband, Tom. She didn't win a prize on hers, but her husband noticed he was scratching off more words than usual.

"I was just hoping we'd win at least $25," he said.

Once he was done, they went through the ticket and double-checked each word. Then they texted a photo of the lucky ticket to their two children, who looked it over and confirmed the big win. Finally, they took it to a local gas station to have it checked, just to be sure.

"I didn't want to go all that way to claim it and then you guys say, 'No, you're not a winner' again," Suzanne Wubbena said with a laugh.

She said they plan to use part of their winnings on a pair of splurges: a Wyoming hunting trip for him, and a new TV for her.

The $50,000 Super Crossword is a $5 scratch game that features 105 top prizes of $50,000 and overall odds of 1 in 3.26. For more information about this game, and the number of prizes still available, visit www.ialottery.com.
