Birthday Camping Trip Results In Lottery Prize For Urbandale Woman

Justine Desmond Claims $50,000 Top Prize in New 'JACKPOT PARTY®' Scratch Game

CLIVE, Iowa – An Urbandale woman came home from a weekend camping trip with a $50,000 lottery prize.

Justine Desmond was camping with her boyfriend, Jeff Rucker, at Pine Lake in Eldora to celebrate her 50th birthday. They ran out of ice and went to restock at Casey's, 1807 Edgington Ave.

"My boyfriend went to go buy some ice because we ran out and Pick 3 and Pick 4 tickets, which he plays all the time," Desmond said. "I thought, 'Well, I'd play the JACKPOT PARTY because I saw as a VIP Club member, the losing tickets you could enter into a contest.'"

Desmond returned to the campground with a handful of tickets and the first one she scratched revealed the $50,000 winner. It was the second of eight top prizes awarded in the game.

"I didn't believe it and I kept saying, 'Is this a joke? Are you joking (with) me? Is this a joke?'" Desmond recalled with a laugh. "We both, for the next couple of hours, were in a daze."

She scanned the ticket on her Iowa Lottery LotteryPlus mobile app to confirm the ticket was a winner and kept close watch on it for the rest of their trip. She claimed her prize June 26 at lottery headquarters in Clive.

She plans to buy a new car and invest in Rucker's new salsa business.
